Excerpt: Dangerous Distractions by Mia Watts

Dangerous Distraction
By Mia Watts
Excerpt

Rook knew what he had to do. The man had brought it on himself, the asshole. There were rules among alpha dogs. You pissed on the property, not the other dog. He needed to be taken down a peg, sent through the doors with his charismatic tail tucked between his legs and yelping. Strip his alpha. Make him a bitch. Besides, Rook had the undeniable urge to taste those sarcastically twisting lips.

He caught the man behind the neck with lightning speed, cradled his nape with laced fingers, and drew him in. The man looked surprised. He should be. It kind of surprised Rook with how easy it was to suck face with the enemy.

Rook’s lips made contact, claiming the other man’s mouth with firm pressure. The man’s bottom lip felt fuller than the top, soft, unexpectedly so. He grabbed Rook’s forearms and pulled, but Rook held fast, stroking his tongue in and deep when the man grimaced. Rook held him as his tongue explored. Fingers bit the insides of Rook’s wrists. He ignored the pain.

Free fucking beer for a month. He’s gonna give in soon. Any minute.

Hoots sounded around them. There was a cheer, some chanting. Rook heard Fucktardpissant above the bunch shouting something lame. The digging fingers hurt a little less, the grimace relaxed, and in another second the tables turned.

Aggressive dominance was stolen from Rook as the man responded, tangling his tongue with his instead of pulling away. Rook’s stomach spiraled downwards, made the floor unsteady again. It changed everything, softened, ripened, stretched until the only thing holding his wayward stomach up, was Rook’s stiff cock playing kick-stand to his shivering insides.

His pulse raced, his head swam, and Rook almost lost touch with reality as he barely strangled off the groan rising in his chest. He pulled away first, stumbling backwards. He stared at the other man, dragged the back of his hand across his mouth.

Gedry yelled, “The ninth ain’t got their own beer and pretzels?” Peripheral sound came rushing back, reminding Rook what he’d been doing and why he had thought kissing the man had been a good idea. Why had that been, again?

“What the fuck was that?” one of the ninth asked, his voice high pitched and nervous.

Rook shored himself up with arrogance he didn’t feel. He turned to the other four with a wide, knowing grin. “Who’s next?”

“The fucking seventh wants to have your baby cops, Nate,” another said, sneering. Nate’s friends laughed tightly.

He didn’t look at Nate, certain he’d notice how shaken the kiss had left Rook. Nonetheless, he listened for Nate’s response as he opened his arms in a “bring it on” gesture.

The bar continued to chant. The bar tender yelled to take it outside.

“Let’s go,” Nate said. His voice was barely loud enough to carry.

The bar cheered. Rook turned a slow circle like the champion in a fight, a cocky grin on his face as he bounced his wide-spread arms to the time of their chants. “Rook! Rook! Rook! Rook!”

The ninth began to file out and Rook kept his back to them, a deliberate show of disrespect and lack of concern.

A sharp, stinging slap zinged his ass. A warm body pressed up close to Rook’s back preventing him from turning. Nate, the fallen dog, whispered close to Rook’s ear from behind.

“It took one kiss to get you hard enough to pound nails. Another one, and your ass is mine for the taking. Next time we meet, I’m going to Queen your Rook, bitch.”

Ebook Giveaway: Three Minute Man by Kim Dare [CONTEST CLOSED]

Many thanks to author Kim Dare for donating a copy of her kinky romance, Three Minute Man, for me to give away to one lucky reader!

Three minutes doesn’t give Ian much time to prove he’s the dominant that Susan had given up on ever finding, but it’s amazing what the right man can do in three minutes!

Ian had plans for the submissive he’d seen playing casual games with other dominant men in the local leather bars, but she disappeared off the kinky scene before he had a chance to claim her. When he finds her working in a speed dating club, he’s determined not to let her slip through his fingers again.

Susan made a conscious decision to give up on the lifestyle. She’s not going to change her mind just because some dominant strolls into her life and starts snapping his fingers. The fact that Ian calls to the very part of her that she’s been trying to repress for the last eighteen months isn’t important. She’s not going back on her decision.

Unfortunately for Susan, she’s never been able to resist a bet – not when there’s more than money at stake.

Says Kim about Three Minute Man:

I’m 26 years old, from Wales, UK. I’m a full time writer, and apparently incapable of resisting writing books to fit a certain kind of title.

The Perfect Timing series came about because, for reasons I’ve never quite been able to work out, I ended up writing about half a dozen books in a row that all revolved around the many and varied ways timing can make or break a relationship.

I figured that anyone reading them would either think I was obsessed with time or working on some sort of themed collection. The second option made me look a bit saner than the former, and so the series was born. For reasons that probably seemed good at the time, I decided there should be twelve books in the series. So I needed a few more than I had.

As soon as I started digging around in the back of my mind for a timely sort of title, Three Minute Man jumped out at me. I couldn’t resist. This book is the direct result of me giving in to that temptation.

Ebook Giveaway: Beauty and the Feast by Julia Barrett [CONTEST CLOSED]

Many thanks to author Julia Barrett for donating a copy of her forthcoming steamy romance, Beauty and the Feast (to be released March 16), for me to give away to one lucky blog reader!

Eva Raines is an uncomplicated country girl who’s all about food. Eva moves to the Napa Valley where her culinary skills come to the attention of the owners of a start-up and Eva finds her niche as a personal chef. Now all she needs is a man as perfect as her cooking, but she has serious doubts such a creature exists.

When wealthy entrepreneur, winery owner, and noted lothario, Gabriel Abbott, makes plans to seduce his flavor of the month, his assistant hires All Things to All People to cater a gourmet dinner. Eva expects to use her way with food to showcase the startup. What she unexpectedly discovers is that her culinary skills showcase far more. Gabriel Abbott finds himself seduced by her voice and the sensual flavors and textures of her food and his previous plans are quickly forgotten. He begins to obsess about meeting his little chef in person. He’s not alone. Once Eva hears Gabe’s voice and spends time in his home in the Napa Valley, she begins to wonder about the real man and her dreams of him are so hot they could ignite a barbecue.

When Eva and Gabe finally come face to face, the question is, how hot will their fire burn?

Reading Update
My Fair Captain (Sci-Regency, Book 1) by J.L. Langley. ebook. Another book for Kris’ m/m rut challenge. This was a scifi m/m romance, with a Regency flair to it… and I totally loved it. (I’m really glad I totally loved it, because if I hadn’t? I’d be afraid, as this is a very popular book.) I was a little frustrated during the prologue and first few chapters, as I tried to pull the bits and pieces together (that world-building stuff), but after I hit the breakthrough point (where you absorb the background and it doesn’t interfere with the story anymore), I was transfixed. Very steamy, yet very romantic and highly recommended read. (Kris is gloating. I can hear her.)
The Englor Affair (Sci-Regency, Book 2) by J.L. Langley. ebook. Not quite as good as My Fair Captain, but still a very good m/m scifi romance.
Friction by J.P. Bowie, Jenna Byrnes, Jude Mason, Kim Dare, Ashley Ladd, S.L. Majors, & Cassandra Gold. ebook collection. This was an enjoyable m/m romance collection. I thought of all the stories were, at the very least, decent, with one exception. And there were definitely a couple that were excellent.
Running Hot by Stephani Hecht. ebook short. Nicely done short m/m romance about a paramedic and an ER doctor.
GPS by Leigh Ellwood. ebook short. Cute m/m romance about a guy who gets a GPS for his birthday, but what the heck is up with the darn thing?! (Yes, you’re right – that is Candy Cane Guy in the background.)
Sea of Sin (Creatures of Sin, Book 3? Book 2.5?) by India Harper. ebook short. Ok m/m romance short about a police commander who lives a celibate, closeted life except for the one week during which he goes on a gay cruise vacation. Based on the sort of non-ending to this story, I suspect it’s part of the setup for the next book in the series.
629 Miles To Love by Fae Sutherland & Marguerite Labbe. ebook. Ok m/m romance about two former lovers on a drive, talking about what went wrong. (Lost points for lack of condoms and lack of discussion of same.)
Skin Deep by S. W. Vaughn. ebook. Quite good urban fantasy m/m romance that was a bit hard for me to read at points, due to graphic violence in a domestic abuse situation. I am glad I persevered. (No condoms here, either…)
Falling (Hawkins Ranch, Book 2) by Cameron Dane. ebook. Good paranormal m/m romance about two ranchers, one of whom happens to be a demon, which I would’ve enjoyed more if it had had a bit less torture. Those parts were hard for me to read and I definitely skimmed the more graphic violence.
ReneCade (Hawkins Ranch, Book 3) by Cameron Dane. ebook. Another good m/m romance (no paranormal this time) about a deeply closeted sheriff’s deputy who’s attracted to the sheriff’s son, but very afraid of the potential consequences of that attraction. I’m glad that this was less brutal than Falling, but the angst was flowing more freely and there was cheating, so maybe it was a draw.
Do You Believe in Magic by Drew Zachary. ebook short. Very steamy short m/m romance that was a good antidote to the brutality of Skin Deep and Falling.
Slap and Tickle by Drew Zachary. ebook. So-so m/m romance about a possessive cop and the stripper he’s in love with. I found the nicknames (“Big Daddy” and “Candy Pants”) annoying and the sex-to-story ratio was so skewed I skimmed a lot to find the tiny bits of plot scattered amongst the nudity. Plus a plot point that was played up throughout the book wasn’t resolved so much as dropped, which was odd and rather unsatisfying.

LB Gregg’s Catch Me If You Can “Catch My Review” Contest [CONTEST CLOSED]

Many thanks to the delightful LB Gregg, who has offered an ebook copy of her brand new m/m romantic suspense, Catch Me If You Can (Romano & Albright, Book 1), to one lucky SoC reader!

I had the outrageous good fortune to win an advance copy of Catch Me If You Can a few weeks ago. It was a steamy, fast-paced paced romp of a read that I can happily and highly recommend. Also, everyone who reviews Catch Me If You Can (on Amazon, your blog or LiveJournal, GoodReads, or LibraryThing) by midnight EST, March 16, and leaves a comment for LB with the link to the review will be entered for a chance to win one of two gift $15 certificates to your choice of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, All Romance eBooks, MBAM, or Fictionwise. That winner will be announced March 17.

So, if you are the lucky winner of this contest and read/review your book lickity split, you could win again. How cool is that? 🙂

Lowly art gallery assistant Caesar Romano is freely out of the closet. Now he’d just like to get out of his Nana’s guest room. Everything – his reputation and his financial freedom – is riding on the success of tonight’s gallery opening. If only he could shake free of the past so easily.

A mysterious gatecrasher, Dan Green, looks like a promising addition to his pending new life – until Caesar’s ex shows up and suddenly the opening disintegrates into a half-naked dance melee. When the glitter settles, a missing sculpture of Justin Timberlake has Caesar up to his eyebrows in extortion, intrigue and a wild sexual adventure underneath, inside, and on top of a variety of furnishings.

As the cast of suspects piles up, so do the questions. Like who’s really blackmailing whom? And what does a stolen paint-by-numbers clown matter when Dan is so outrageously capable of blowing Caesar’s resistance to smithereens?

About LB Gregg

LB Gregg began writing in the spring of 2008 at the encouragement of author pal, Josh Lanyon. She never once looked back (although occasionally she looked down and tripped over her own feet). 2009 saw the publication of her best selling Men of Smithfield series.

LB lives in the Connecticut hills with two lazy dogs, three above-average children, and a smoking hot husband who, thank the good Lord, loves to cook. You can find LB at her blog, Nose in a Book, or by visiting her website.

Here’s a bit more about Addison:

Addison Albright lives in the middle of the USA with her husband, son, and four peculiar cats (and, at any given time, various boomerang children and step-children, along with their assorted children and pets). Her stories are gay erotic romance, and tend to be sweet man-love in contemporary settings. Her education, which pretty much doesn’t get used these days, includes a BS in Education with a  major in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry. Addison loves her family, reading, popcorn, boating, french fries, “open window weather,” cats, math, and anything chocolate. She loves to read pretty much anything and everything, anytime and anywhere.

Addison: What am I working on writing-wise? Actually, my life has gotten incredibly busy lately so I haven’t been working on any new projects. I’ve been spending what time I do have available reworking my first editions as their contracts expire, then formatting them as required for upload at various distributors such as Smashwords, 1 Romance Ebooks, and Amazon Kindle. I’ve also had fun making custom covers for my short stories that were previously released with publisher stock covers. Still to come this year are Cow Pie Bingo in April, Nevermore (previously published in Taste Test: A Day at the Beach) in July, and The Straggler (previously published in Taste Test: Shades of Autumn) in November. The first two stories in my Dream series are a larger project I’ll be working on throughout this year for their 2nd editon releases in February and July of 2011. First editions of all these stories are still available in the meantime. Should an actual block of time that would allow me to sit down and truly concentrate on a new project fall into my lap, I do have a couple story ideas rattling around in my mind that I’d like to try writing out sometime in the next two years.

Reading Update
Keeping Promise Rock by Amy Lane. ebook. The only reason I didn’t spend half of this m/m romance sobbing my eyes out is because I took frequent breaks when I started to get wound up. 🙂 Parts of it were gut-wrenching. And parts weren’t. As a whole, this was a powerful, excellent read that I highly recommend.
Quinn’s Hart by Cassandra Gold. ebook. Why, yes, this is the ebook I just won at Jessewave’s. 🙂 This was a really nicely done m/m romance about two wildly dissimilar guys who get to know each other on a singles’ trip to Disney World.
Why, Why, Zed? by Leigh Ellwood. ebook short. Ok, having never flown into Toronto, I totally didn’t get the pun of this title until I read the quote from Neal Pert at the beginning. (Toronto’s airport being YYZ.) This was a so-so m/m romance, although I will confess that the ending surprised the heck out of me.
Footprints and Just Like in the Movies by Clare London. ebook shorts. For some reason, these short m/m romances (the first about two guys who are part of a counter-terrorism team and the second about two hostage negotiators) never fully engaged me – maybe it was the somewhat reserved first person narrative?
A Stranger’s Touch by Anne Brook. ebook short. I have to confess that this m/m tale about a prostitute and a mysterious stranger who delves into his psyche mostly just confused me.
Healing Doctor Ryan by Carol Lynne. ebook. Ok m/m romance about a cancer patient who asks his doctor out after completing treatment.
Lift Me Up by Rayne Auster. ebook. Cute m/m romance about an IT geek who ends up with a broken ankle when his cute neighbor trips over him in the hallway. I got a little frustrated with the dense language now and then, mostly because my brain was in the mood for fluff. 🙂
Thaw in Winter and Darling Brat by Kate Steele. ebook and ebook short. Thaw in Winter was agood m/m romance about Mark, an architect who saves Joe’s life when he’s injured while camping. Joe and Mark are attracted to each other… but Joe can’t remember why exactly he’s wearing that mysterious wedding band on his ring finger. I liked this one a lot, until the point at which the first book stopped abruptly, leaving unresolved a plot point that had been played up quite a bit. I then discovered that there was a short second book, which resolves that plot point. Grrr. I would’ve been happier for it to all be in one book… and maybe it was at one point.
Out of My Mind by M. L. Rhodes. ebook (reread). Well-done m/m romance in which a recently divorced police officer struggles with his growing attraction to his (work) partner/best friend.
Promises by Marie Sexton. ebook. Very good m/m romance about two guys, one gay and one not, in a small Colorado town who become close friends – this was all about letting your fears constrain your life and how good it can feel when  you finally stop doing so. Recommended.
JackMagic by Jillian Snyder. ebook short. Nicely done short m/m romance about a guy who gets dragged to a sexy magic show (part of his sister’s bachelorette party) and bumps into the magician outside between acts.
Private Property by Chloe West & Audra Beagle. ebook. So-so m/m romance about an author with writer’s block who takes a hate to a guy who shows up on his doorstep, claiming the house is his. I found the three main characters annoying and wanted to slap them all. That never makes for a happy reading experience… for me, at least!

Ebook Giveaway: Ryland’s Sacrifice by Kim Dare [CONTEST CLOSED]

Many thanks to author Kim Dare, who’s providing an ebook copy of her forthcoming m/m paranormal romance, Ryland’s Sacrifice, for me to give away to a lucky winner!

Principles don’t pay tuition fees. When Ryland’s math scholarship disappears overnight, he has two choices. He can borrow money from fellow student Jason Burrows, who has very interesting ways of collecting debts. Or, he can volunteer to be thrown to the werelions.

One night spent playing the part of a willing human sacrifice will give him enough money to finish his PhD. It seems like a good deal – right up until the moment he finds himself naked, blindfolded, bound and surrounded by lions.

A bit more about Kim, who might have been a little bit traumatized that I asked, based on her first few sentences!

“Tell me a bit about yourself” is an evil thing to ask a person to do. It’s like handing someone a microphone and telling them to “say something”. Instant mind blank. Here goes anyway…

I’m 26 years old, from Wales in the UK, and apparently incapable of writing anything like this without making it sound like a really bad personal ad, lol.

And on to what I guess is the interesting bit – I write BDSM erotic romances. Most of them are Male/Male, some are Male/Female and a couple are menages, but all of them are kinky and, in their own way, they are all love stories that work towards giving happy endings to characters who really deserve them.

My latest obsession of the moment is with shifters. I’ve already got a pack of werewolves who are having a huge amount of fun over at Total-e-bound. Now, my pride of werelions have found a very nice home at Resplendence Publishing – the humans who fall in love with them are settling in quite well there too.

That’s pretty much it. If you want to know anything else, just ask. I’ll be lurking about while the competition is running, so if any questions crop up in the comments, I’m happy to chat.

Ryland’s Sacrifice will be released by Resplendence Publishing on Tuesday, February 9.

Ebook Giveaway: Keeping Promise Rock by Amy Lane [CONTEST CLOSED]

Many thanks to author (and knitter) Amy Lane, who’s offering up an ebook copy of her new m/m romance release, Keeping Promise Rock, for one lucky commenter! Plus additional thanks to Amy, because I won a copy of the ebook in a contest on her blog, Yarning to Write. 🙂

A bit about the book:

Carrick Francis has spent most of his life jumping into trouble with both feet. The only thing saving him from prison or worse is his absolute devotion to Deacon Winters. Deacon was Crick’s sanity and salvation during a miserable, abusive childhood, and Crick would do anything to stay with him forever. So when Deacon’s father dies, Crick puts his college plans on hold to help Deacon as Deacon has helped him.

Deacon’s greatest wish is to see Crick escape his memories and the town they grew up in so Crick can enjoy a shining future. But after two years of growing feelings and temptation, the painfully shy Deacon finally succumbs to Crick’s determined advances and admits he sees himself as part of Crick’s life.

It nearly destroys Deacon when he discovers Crick has been waiting to be pushed away, which is what Crick’s family did in the past. When Crick’s knack for volatile decisions lands him far away from home, Deacon is left, shell-shocked and alone, struggling to reforge his heart in a world where love with Crick is a promise, but by no means a certainty.

And a bit about Amy:

Amy Lane mothers four children, teaches high school part time, and when the dragon roars in her blood, she writes. Her house is a demolition zone, her car is an accident waiting to happen, but her children love movies, science fiction, and prefer plastic swords to any other toy so she figures she’s done her job well. She spent five years as an independent writer and although she loves m/m and will continue to write it, she still has stories to tell from her Little Goddess series and isn’t going to give up being an indie any time soon. She is currently working on the sequel to Keeping Promise Rock, which is titled Making Promises, and then she’ll move on to the final installment of her novella series, Jack and Teague (and Katy): A Story of Green’s Hill. (The first five installments of this last one are available on her website for absolutely free!)
