Reading Update
One Coffee With (Sigrid Harald #1) by Margaret Maron. I can’t figure out why I liked this mystery so much the first time I read it roughly 10 years ago. It has not aged well.

Plus hockey fics. Of course. 🙂

Can’t linkity for long – unpacking!

Congrats to Joder, who won Stranded by Andrew Grey! Stranded will be released by Dreamspinner Press on July 15.

  • On Saturday, the movers (Tyler and Tyler) moved the bulk of my worldly goods from my old third-floor condo (no elevator) to my new condo 6.5 blocks away… on the same street.
  • Hey, I like my neighborhood! 🙂
  • And I am soooooo glad I hired movers (a first for me) – it was worth every penny.
  • But oh, I forgot how time consuming it is to unpack and find a place for everything…
  • Need to buy more shelf lining paper – have so far gone through around 55 feet of the 18″ wide stuff and I am not done.

Reading Update
Undone Deeds (Connor Grey #6) by Mark del Franco. This is a book that seemed to be trying too hard and simultaneously not trying hard enough, as the first half was slow and the second half was hella fast. Refreshing your memory of Celtic mythology before you read it wouldn’t be amiss.

Congrats to Azure J, who won Masochist’s Choice (Sun, Sea and Submission #5) by Kim Dare!

  • Chiang Mai Thai in Uptown Minneapolis has this amazing green sauce that comes with the grilled chicken Chiang Mai style. Everyone I know who’s had it agrees it’s completely delicious and addictive, and we all hoard our leftover bits of the sauce to use at home. All I can tell you is that it has garlic, some sort of spicy green chile (I’m guessing a type of spicy green Thai chile), and something that makes it a bit sticky when spilled (sugar? lime juice?). It smells like the spicy essence of greenness. YUM.

Reading Update (I know, I’m as shocked about this as you are)
Unshapely Things (Connor Grey #1) by Mark Del Franco. reread. I originally read this in February 2008. Upon rereading, I definitely appreciated some of the more “old school” urban fantasy elements (harking back to Charles de Lint, Emma Bull, Terri Windling, Tanya Huff, etc), such as the involvement of the Fae and the city/urban environment seeming to almost be a character itself. In this tale of druid who’s lost his powers and helps out the Boston Police Department as best he can, the urban fantasy elements pair interestingly with a first-person noir detective narrative (as with the Dresden Files). On with my reread of the next two books, which is as far as I made it before running out of steam with the genre last time.
Unquiet Dreams (Connor Grey #2) by Mark Del Franco. reread. Very good urban fantasy in which Connor encounters trolls and dwarves and tree spirits, oh my!
Unfallen Dead (Connor Grey #3) by Mark Del Franco. reread. Another good installment in the Connor Grey series. Like orannia, I didn’t think the romantic relationship added anything to the story.

Mayhem impersonating a Dali clock…

Linkity suspects all those crows are up to something nefarious

Congrats to Joder, who won Collusion (Diversion #2) by Eden Winters! Collusion will be released on February 24 by Amber Quill Press.

Congrats to Urbanista, who won Take It Off (Market Garden #2) by L.A. Witt and Aleksandr Voinov! Take It Off will be released February 25 by Riptide Publishing.

Congrats to Irene, who won Something in the Way He Needs (Family #1) by Cardeno C! Something in the Way He Needs will be released on February 25 by Dreamspinner Press.

How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You by Matthew Inman. Pretty good collection of The Oatmeal’s cat-themed comics. I knew someone would get me this for Christmas… it was my brother. 🙂 (Or, per the gift tag, his cat Riley, who happens to be Chaos’ mom…)

Hockey fics. No surprise there. 🙂
Dead in LA (LA Paranormal 1 & 2) by Lou Harper. ebook. arc. Solid m/m paranormal romantic suspense about a prickly former construction worker who’s going back to school and advertises for a roommate. He really doesn’t expect to end up with an actually psychic roommate… or one he finds attractive. Looking forward to more in this series!
Inseparable by Chris Scully. ebook. Sweet holiday m/m romance about a guy who’s been hit by a car and wakes up in the hospital with amnesia and a guy who says they’re just friends, even though that doesn’t feel right.
Soups and Diners by Alex Whitehall. ebook short. arc. Good short m/m holiday romance about two refugees from a wedding reception who run into each other in a late night diner.

Of course there were hockey fics. Onward! 🙂
Counterpoint (Song of the Fallen #1) by Rachel Haimowitz. ebook. Very good m/m fantasy romance about an elf who’s captured by humans while trying to protect his sister, then becomes the favored prisoner of the area’s regent. I started reading this nearly two years ago, soon after it was released. Then I learned that the book ended in an evil cliffhanger, so I stopped reading until the sequel came out  (if I’d reached that cliffhanger, I would have been too pissed to ever read the sequel).
Crescendo (Song of the Fallen #1) by Rachel Haimowitz. ebook. Very good m/m fantasy romance picking right up where the first book left off, as a human prince-regent and his elven lover-slave try to find their way through deceit and betrayal and perhaps save both their races.
In the Dark (PsyCop #6.1) by Jordan Castillo Price. ebook short. Good short m/m paranormal romance in which Vic and Jacob go to a fancy Halloween party thrown by one of Jacob’s exes.
Jock Straps on Sale (PsyCop Flash Fic) by Jordan Castillo Price. free online short. Ok ultrashort fic about Vic stopping at Crash’s store.
Black Box (Turbulence #5) by Jordan Castillo Price. ebook short. Good installment of this serial, with several flashbacks to Marlin, the pilot who killed himself at the beginning of the story.
Khyber Run by Amber Green. ebook. Pretty good m/m suspense about an Afghan-American Navy corpsmen who’s roped into helping a group of Marines track down a deserter without knowing the full story. Having just read the blurb, it makes some things clear that weren’t really clear from reading the story, but would definitely have been good to know when reading…
Fontana by Joshua Martino. ebook. Ok novel told from the first person POV of an alcoholic sportswriter who tries to save his career by outting a record-breaking major league baseball player. In Steve Kluger’s hands, this could’ve been a great story.
Stranger in Translation by Charles Raines. ebook. So-so stream-of-consciousness story of a Englishman living in Marseilles, translating a novel into French and becoming intrigued by a stranger who persists in chattering away when he’s trying to enjoy the quiet of a cemetery.
Lord & Master by HC Brown. ebook. Not sure there’s a likeable character in this kinky m/m historical “romance”. Between the characters and the intermittently overwrought and clumsy writing, this wasn’t for me. DNF.

“Not only can I read your minds, I can control your thoughts!” -Chaos

Nothing much new to report from ’round here. May’s still staying in my bedroom overnight and when I’m gone for any length of time, since Chaos keeps hissing (and occasionally growling) at her. Of course, now May’s asleep on the ottoman and Chaos is in the chair looking baleful but not hissing…

A little linkity for a rough week

Congrats to Dianna, who won Mayon by Mickie B. Ashling! Mayon will be released by Dreamspinner Press on November 19.

May’s not as lively now that the anesthetic and analgesic have worn off, but I really can’t blame her for that. Still getting food into her at least – she had some turkey baby food for dinner last night (better than nothing, right?!). Having trouble believing tomorrow’s my birthday after this rough, rough week, y’know? On the plus side, it doesn’t look like any of my numerous cat bites have gotten infected. Maybe I should stop joking about Chaos being a house panther… (For the morbidly curious, here’s what my left ankle and right calf looked like on Tuesday.)

Heart in Hand by Salifiable. free online. reread. The hockey rpf that started it all. Very good m/m romance about two hockey players on rival teams who become friends – and more – through an unusual turn of events. I got sniffly more than once while I was reading this one. Also while rereading.
Plus lots of other hockey rpfs.

Congrats to Juli, who won A Slice of Love (Love #4) by Andrew Grey! A Slice of Love is being released today by Dreamspinner Press.

Diversion by Eden Winters. reread. Really good m/m romantic suspense about prescription drug smuggling. I beta read this, and I never feel quite right trying to review a book when I’ve done that! And yes, there’s a very good reason this interrupted my hockey immersion. Nope. Not telling. 🙂
