Reading Update
Swan: Poems and Prose Poems by Mary Oliver. This one had a couple of things I quite liked, but overall it didn’t resonate that much with me.
Journal Sparks: Fire Up Your Creativity with Spontaneous Art, Wild Writing, and Inventive Thinking by Emily K Neuburger. Very good collection of creative journaling ideas for those times when you need some inspiration. It also includes a section on making your own simple journals, plus has some stickers and artsy paper to use in your own creative journal.
Dare to Sketch: A Guide to Drawing on the Go by Felix Scheinberger. Ok overview of drawing basics with particular tips for urban sketchers. Definitely feels like a variation of other things I’ve read before.
Footnotes from the World’s Greatest Bookstores: True Tales and Lost Moments from Book Buyers, Booksellers, and Book Lovers by Bob Eckstein. A lovely little book highlighting 75 bookstores from around the world, with a watercolor painting and anecdote for each. This is one I’m perfectly fine with reading from the library and not owning.

Reading Update
Drawing AutismDrawing Autism by Jill Mullen. It was interesting to see the wide variety of art drawn by others on the spectrum and to read their thoughts about their art. But my favorite remains this bit from Temple Grandin’s intro:

Some people who are visual thinkers can do geometry and trigonometry; they possess the second kind of mind: the pattern thinker. Instead of creating photo-realistic pictures in their imaginations, they see patterns and relationships between numbers. It is a more abstract form of visual thinking…. If they do visual art, it may be more abstract and impressionistic, as opposed to photo-realistic.

Linkity really didn’t expect allergies in February

Congrats to Susana, who won Lovers Leap by JL Merrow! Lovers Leap will be released by Riptide Publishing on February 29.

If you’re using mobile and things are weird, it’s probably because I have the mobile plugin for my site turned off right now – it decided that everyone was on mobile. *sigh*

Reading Update
Mixed Media Revolution: Creative Ideas for Reusing Your Art by Darlene Olivia McElroy & Sandra Duran Wilson. So-so whirlwind overview of many, many mixed media techniques. Some of the techniques required you to scan QR codes or visit the publisher’s website for more details, which I found annoying.
The Mixed-Media Artist: Art Tips, Tricks, Secrets and Dreams from Over 40 Amazing Artists by Seth Apter. This did not fare well being read after An Illustrated Life: Drawing Inspiration from the Private Sketchbooks of Artists, Illustrators and Designers.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I was completely unprepared for how this book sucked me in – I read it in one sitting, tissue box close by.
