Reading Update
Basic Colored Pencil Techniques by Bet Borgeson. Very good book that’s exactly what’s on the tin. 🙂 I think I saw this used in Uptown a couple weeks ago – I’m going to check to see if it’s still there. It’ll be easier to use as a reference if I have a physical copy on hand, instead of repeatedly borrowing the ebook from the library. (Found it used at Magers & Quinn – yay!)
Journal It! Perspective in Creative Journaling by Jenny Doh. Gorgeous and inspiring words and images on keeping an art journal from 19 artists. Since I had to take a break in the middle of reading it to go art, I’d definitely recommend it for those looking for inspiration.

Ebook giveaway: Secrets and Bow Ties (Secrets #3) by Lou Harper [CONTEST CLOSED]

Congrats to Denise D, who won King’s Conquest (Mending the Rift #1) (2nd ed) by Valentina Heart!

Many thanks to Lou Harper for donating an ebook copy of her forthcoming m/m romantic suspense/mystery, Secrets and Bow Ties (Secrets #3), for a lucky commenter to win! Secrets and Bow Ties will be released by Samhain Publishing on May 19.

Who said nerdy can’t be sexy?

Self-confessed gold digger Dylan Price is cooling his heels as a waiter at a trendy West Hollywood restaurant, waiting for the sugar daddy of his dreams to walk through the doors. Someone rich, sophisticated. Preferably old.

Bookish Simon Wainwright couldn’t be further from Dylan’s ideal. Aside from his terrible fashion sense, Simon suffers from a glaring lack of a Beverly Hills mansion. And he’s barely over thirty!

Dylan, however, isn’t made of stone. Coincidence, an obscene candle, even Simon’s dorky cardigan compel him to give the shy academic a very special birthday gift, which Dylan files away as a one-night stand. But when Dylan’s quest lands him in hot water, he runs to Simon to hide.

The two take off for Las Vegas, where Dylan takes upon himself to give Simon a complete makeover. For reasons he can’t comprehend, Dylan begins to reevaluate his life – and what he holds most dear. But with danger not far behind, he might be too late.

Warning: Contains a nightclub where the staff is as hot as the food, a waiter with a smart mouth (in more ways than one), a nerdy college professor, Vegas “boylesque” shows, and lots of smexy times.

About Lou

Under a prickly, cynical surface Lou Harper is an incorrigible romantic. Her love affair with the written word started at a tender age. There was never a time when stories weren’t romping around in her head. She is currently embroiled in a ruinous romance with adjectives. In her free time Lou stalks deviant words and feral narratives.

Lou’s favorite animal is the hedgehog. She likes nature, books, movies, photography, and good food. She has a temper and mood swings.

Lou has misspent most of her life in parts of Europe and the US, but is now firmly settled in Los Angeles and worships the sun. However, she thinks the ocean smells funny. Lou is a loner, a misfit, and a happy drunk. You can find out more about Lou and her books at her website, her blog, and Goodreads.

Can King Merin face his loss, save his husband and protect his kingdom, or have his enemies finally found a way to defeat him?

When an enemy Merin thought defeated takes his unborn children away from him, he’s at the end of his rope and still has to find enough strength to save his husband Rin from the clutches of sorrow. Unable to find peace, Merin and Rin must deal with an aggressor who plots to ruin any chance of happiness that they might have. To make things worse, the newly united countries must prepare for a new trial – a war against a vicious invading army that’s using the weakened state of the kingdom for its benefit.

How will Merin and Rin recover from their terrible loss and give their people heirs? About Valentina

Valentina Heart lives at different locations in Split, at the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Like the directions of her stories her life takes a new twist with every passing year and she welcomes every single one.

As an avid reader for many years, she had a habit of mixing fiction with reality, until she realized that she could simply breathe life to her characters and make them as real as they could get. From forever romantic to deeply troubled, they bring joy to their creator as well as frustration with their naughty behavior.

Kinky imagination aside, she enjoys music and movies just as much as reading, but give her summer all year round and she’ll be ready to free climb, swim, or stretch in all those mind stirring yoga positions.

You can find out more about Valentina at her website, on Goodreads, or on Facebook.

Misadventures in Stock Photography: Part the 237th (The Body Snatching Cloak)

Congrats to Sadonna, who won Jack in the Green (2nd ed) by JL Merrow! Jack in the Green was released by JMS Books on May 3.

Welcome to another edition of the Misadventures in Stock Photography! Today we’ll be meeting The Body Snatching Cloak. Onward!

accidentally

ed himself out of his house on the

when, upon

the morning after conducting a very successful and

, he had

d down the stairs and

outside to watch the sun rise. Whoops!

So there are actually only four photos of the same, presumably original, guy, as seen on The Mercenary. Then it looks like a publisher used him on the cover of Lock and some poor cover artist had to figure out how to include the cloak and arm/chest rope on a bunch of other stock photos to visually link the rest of the covers for the series.

Reading Update
The Sketchbook Challenge: Techniques, Prompts, and Inspiration for Achieving Your Creative Goals by Sue Bleiweiss. It’s very pretty, but I didn’t find it particularly inspiring.
The Complete Colored Pencil Book by Bernard Poulin. Ok book about colored pencil techniques.I found the demonstration sections more interesting in the basic technique sections near the beginning, but I merely skimmed the last few chapters, which covered advanced tips and tricks with extra focus on portraiture (the author’s specialty and not a particular interest of mine).
Water Paper Paint: Exploring Creativity with Watercolor and Mixed Media by Heather Smith Jones. This had some good information about color theory and I’m going to actually try several of the projects from this one!
