I recently scanned in a few pictures from the wayback before I had a digital camera and thought I’d slowly share some of them with you. Looks like 1999 was a year of travel… although some of these pictures could certainly be from 1998, since they don’t have dates!

Also from Salem – I can’t remember who this is a statue of, other than that it isn’t a witch. Help me out here, Massachusetts peeps! Update: Thanks to the Massachusetts (and Utah) folks, I now know that this is Roger Conant, founder of Salem.
Moving right along to the other coast, a ginormous tree in Olympic National Park:
The Cherry Bank Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, where we stayed simply because it had a rotating mermaid statue on top. Who could resist?! (Sadly, it appears to have been torn down and “boutique residences” are being built there instead.)
Also in British Columbia – the lovely treehouse we stayed in on Salt Spring Island. Again, who could resist? (And dang, looks like this place is closed now, too.)

A rotating Mermaid! That would be a definite stop. That statue is Roger Conant…and I’m from Utah;-)

I’ve always wanted a treehouse. (That’s one of the reasons I like living on the second floor–there are trees right outside half of my windows.)
Chris, you have such a wonderful sense of whimsy, with the tree house and the rotating mermaid. And the whole concept of cats taking a meeting strikes me as too funny!

That tree house is cool! When my daughter was 19, she went to Costa Rica for a month with a couple friends and they stayed in a treehouse. They had a blast.
The treehouse is very cool. We stayed in a treecondo up at Spirit Mountain a few years ago – it was weird.

Ha ha ha… guardian fruit baskets! I’ll have to go get some pics of the gryphons/creepy guardian creatures at the antique store down the road. Our house guardians are warm and black and furry and make quite a racket when somebody walks up to the house.

I would have loved to stay at the Salt Spring Forest Retreat. Sigh…. We like yurt camping when we can find them. Not in trees but at least different.

btw, in a former life, I went to the American Academy of Art, directly across the street from the lion at the Art Institute–in the People’s Gas Light and Coke building, where there is/was a Bennigan’s on the ground floor. I was there when the Bears were in the superbowl and the lions were wearing the Bears helmets!
