At least I’m not an arboreal anarchist like some other blogger I know… :)

By popular outcry (and because I’m still not exactly sure where my tree identification books are), here are several pictures of the type of trees I was mentioning. Click to embiggen.

I know, I know, probably the first person who comments will know what they are and will mock me for all eternity. (And I’ll probably slap my forehead and mutter, “D’oh,” when I find out what it is.) Edited: I believe it’s a thornless cultivar of honey locust. Thanks to everyone who had tree suggestions!

Curious about the title? Tuesday’s post evoked the following comment:

I would never have guessed a forestry degree. However, if you contact the city arborist, they will tell you. At least they will in St. Paul. Then they add that they know you illegally planted flowering crabs on the boulevard. However, the cultivar was an excellent choice.

*ahem*

Some other pictures from my neighborhood… O noes! A dead tinsel tree!

*blink blink*

Definitely click to embiggen.

Every time I pass that sign, I’m tempted to look in the window to find out how buffalo manage to sit in the diner’s booths…

  1. At first glance at the smaller pics, I thought locust. Then on the biggified version of the leaves I noticed that the leaflets appear lanceolate rather than petiolate, which says to me walnut family. Have you ever noticed nuts on them?

  2. I am going to jump over the tree question… I cant eve nidentify the flowers in my back garden much less trees.

What is the toy on the bike… not sure what biker that was…

Love the downed tinsel in May…

  3. I’m trying to be mature and not make a comment about how I’m sure Chris would never overlook nuts, just like she never overlooks man boobs or candy canes. Stalkers have spectacular observational skills.

  4. So, who the heck comments at 2 and 3 am?? The leaves in Pic 1 do look like walnut (more so than butternut because they have more leaflets). You sure it’s not Tree of Heaven guess… Ailanthus altimissa? Maybe it got past that I’m growing 3 feet in a day stage and became a tree… Do the leaves stink when you crush them? Someplace between rancid peanut butter and dog poo?

I think you’re trying to TRICK us! The tree in pic 1 looks like it’s off to the side in pic 2 and the tree in pic 2 looks like a different one. Yes? No?

  5. Um. No clue. Have seen them here though.

OK, so I’m just a dull dully dull dull this morning, because when I saw the sign, I said ‘ew, they serve buffalo meat’! And never even thought of the serving of buffalo in the restaurant angle.

    Man. I am slow! 😉

  6. Chris- It must be a tight squeeze, getting those Buffalo into those restaurant booths….

It may be an acacia, or black locust. I had one and someone told me they are the national tree of Hungary.

  7. Boggled that there are cities with arborists. We have a shade tree commission. It is small. It is volunteer. I don’t think anyone on it has a degree in a related field.

    But they do like trees.

    And shade, of course.

  8. LOL – I can see me talking to the city: “Blog consensus is that they’re ash trees. I don’t care if you don’t think they’re ash trees. The blog has spoken!”

  9. I’m with Mel. At first glance I thought locus. We have quite a bit of black locust out here.

A very easy way to eliminate or confirm is the presence of flowers with a heady perfume in the late spring/early summer.

    Good luck!

  10. I got confused by the title of your post, so I didn’t even get to the tree question. Or the stuffed animal motorcycle rider. Or the buffalo.

  11. I think it’s a China Berry tree. Does it have waxy little berries at some point in the year? Leaf pattern too big to be Mimosa…

Buffalo are always welcome so long as they take their patties with them when they go. Besides, it’s a barter system… They get to eat, if they leave their wings behind for the other patrons.

  12. One of the takeout menus where I used to live had small buffalo for 4.95 and large buffalo for 5.95. I could never quite figure out why anyone wouldn’t spring the extra dollar for a more robust buffalo!

  13. Oooh yeah, Chinaberry tree or an ash or a walnut or one of those pepper trees. I could only see the leaves on one tree when I embiggened.
They SERVE buffalo, not serve buffalo! Let me know when you stop in there.

  14. A forestry degree! I considered that. Were you going to be a forest ranger? As a young girl, I was quite taken with their snazzy outfits.

I love the big sky in your photos. Reminds me of the midwest, where the horizon isn’t crowded by mountain ranges.

  15. May;

I’m sleepy, can I climb up there too? You look so soft and cute..

Horticulture is not my specialty no clue re the tree. I like the bike.

The downed tinsel? Looks like my neighbour’s lawn right now.

    LOL
You woke me up Chris. 😉

  16. Yeah, honey locust is the first tree. Cannot tell from the photo of the second. You must harvest a leaf and post a photo of that, plus a closeup of the bark 😉

I had the same thought about the buffalo…

  17. We have a Butternut tree at the cabin and the leaves do look similar. However, it drops these green sticky pods once a year that the animals make disappear overnight.

  18. Don’t think they have Honey Locuts here. That is one big tree! I’m about to get my trees pruned. (I’m a great believer in healthy trees 🙂

And that photo of May… *dies*

  19. The poor buffalo! How do they fit them on the plates?

Um – no clue about the tree. I’m gonna go out on a limb *ahem* and say it’s a big green one. *beams*
