DPNs left unattended will be devoured

Not suitable for those sensitive to violence against DPNs. You have been warned. What follows isn’t pretty.

A few weeks ago, Jeanne happened to leave a DPN (double-pointed needle) here after she came over to knit. I don’t think she’ll make that mistake a second time… (Yes, that is one of its tips lying near the bottom of the photo. No, I have no idea where the other tip is. Guess I’ll be looking for it in the litterbox…)

“Hey, Mom put this great toy out again!” -Chaos

*mwmph-crunch* -Mayhem

“Don’t hog it, May – I was the one who found it on the end table in the first place!” -Chaos

*mwmph-crunch* -Mayhem

“Hey, big kitty, I was playing with that!” -Mayhem

*mwmph-crunch* -Chaos

“Ha!” *mwmph-crunch* -Mayhem

“Hey! I was chewing on that!” -Chaos

“Maybe I can steal it back…” -Chaos

*mwmph-crunch* -Mayhem

I’m rather unclear what’s happening in this picture, but you could hear scuffling and scurrying and the DPN definitely went with them:

“Mom!! Why did you take it away?!” -Chaos & Mayhem

Anyone know why they don’t make chew toys for cats?!

  1. That’s just wrong…. my human takes away all her knitting supplies too! and my dumb old big brother doesn’t even care so it’s just me fighting for the “toys”

  2. Apparently Crystal Palace and Brittany and Knit Picks *do* make chew toys for cats – in multipacks, no less. It is jus we unenlightened human types that use them for other than their intended purpose.

  3. Well – that should make for a fun visit to the *queue ominous music* VET Chaos!! Think about that now that you’ve had your fun with a sharp stick!

  4. I love that picture of the two of them chewing at the same time. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am so lucky that Mel only chews on tape and plastic. (Which also can’t be good for him, but at least I’m only worrying about *him* when I can’t prevent it.)

  5. I’m sure they do make chew toys for cats but they probably don’t last long ๐Ÿ˜‰ Poor DPN, such nice crunchy bamboo perhaps? Sally used to chew on the edges of my wicker baskets I kept yarn in, so maybe it is a cat trend.

  6. My girl kitty doesn’t play with toys at all, so it was a huge surprise to me to learn just how many “cat toys” we had in the house after we adopted Sly. And, yes, knitting needles of all kinds are on the list. Thankfully, he just bats them around and only bites them hard enough to carry them so there is no destruction.

  7. WE would NEVER do anything bad like that!! What naughty little kitties those two are. (And don’t they realize there are more exciting things in this world – like plastic bags and cardboard boxes?)

  8. We actually purchased some raw hide things after a similarly tragic incident *sniff* The dog next door saw the benefit of them after Jack & Benny gave them the evil eye.

  9. I love chewing things. But Mom doesn’t it like it when I chew on her stuff. She buys me cat chew sticks called N-Bone. They are chicken flavoured and I love them. They are slightly crunchy and she says they’re good for my teeth.

  10. My husband and I were just talking last night about how lucky we are that our cat doesn’t chew up or scratch anything she isn’t supposed to. It took her 3 weeks to figure out that it was really OK for her to play with the toy I bought her. It would be awfully hard to train me not to leave yarn and needles lying about.

  11. Mine like the long bamboo types for chewing too. Which is why Tim hates when I knit with aluminum, hahahaha.

I think of Chaos and Mayhem when I go to the shelter. We seem to have a number of black cats right now, Jade and Jordan, and black and white Oreo, but I think “Chaos and Mayhem” when I see them.

Maybe you could get an campaign started like Morris did for orange kitties, so we could get all these terrific black cats some good new homes?! ๐Ÿ™‚ You could advertise dpns…

  12. A friend of mine would buy her border collie 3 ft chew bones. Maybe Chaos and Mayhem would like one of those, especially if you tried to knit with it first and acted like it was a very precious object of yours. I’ve never seen such chew-happy cats before. I should let my mother know how lucky she’s been in her cats. She can leave knitting lying around.

  13. Hysterical!(Not for your friend, of course, whose DPN’s suffered a chewy demise). Why is it that they will ALWAYS run off with the one thing that is NOT their toy!?

My dear friend went to Thailand and brought me back a beautiful pair of handmade chopsticks with coral on the tips. The one weekend I went away and left my husband to babysit(read: same as no supervision..), Toebi pulled one down and now probably has coral imbedded in his digestive system somewhere–and I have only one chopstick…

Kitties are strange, chewy creatures. At least DPN’s are more easily replaced ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. It’s nice to see the kids playing so well together!
Maybe you need to buy them 14″ red plastic knitting needles. Those seems to work quite well also.

  15. But they DO make chew toys for cats! They are sold at yarn stores everywhere. What do you mean that’s not meant for cats? Really? Uh oh, gotta run….

  16. Hee, whoops. Poor little DPN. Don’t swallow that guys, I don’t think it would be all that comfortable coming out. I think they are trying to tell you that you don’t give them enough kitty treats Chris. You should look into remedying that.

  17. I know! I know! It was a relay race with the dpn.

They sould make fish flavored chew toys for kitties, after all they make chew toys for dogs and birds, why should cats be left out.

  18. oh my.. looks just like my cats ๐Ÿ™‚
I have to certain to hide my bamboo dpn’s if I leave the room for even 5 minutes, or they are toast.
I used to have a cat that absolutely loved doggie chew toys (grin)

  19. Did Jeanne see this post? You know, in my house, it’s the dog who does this. Felix is a batter(er), but Della has to chew.

I don’t want to tell you where I see the pieces of my needlesรขโ‚ฌยฆyou can probably figure that one out. ๐Ÿ™‚
