Wireless woes

Argh – my wireless connection hasn’t been very stable for the past few days. Consequently, I’m behind on bloglines again and am a little frustrated at how many attempts it took me to get this post (such as it is) together. Fortunately, after an hour on the phone with tech support last night (aka “Dad”), things should be a lot better now. Just too many wireless networks in my little corner of the metropolis, apparently, all of us fighting for the same few channels.

Contest Update
Lisa has a lot of patterns from her LYS closing – leave a comment at Lisa’s blog for Libby (owner of the LYS), and you could receive a pattern or patterns.

Karrie’s having Fake Rhinebeck Post contest – if you didn’t go to Rhinebeck, go stashdiving and get excited again about yarn you already own! Post a picture and blog about it before midnight (PDT), October 27, and you could win a fibery prize.

Reading Update
Gone with the Nerd, Nerd in Shining Armor, and My Nerdy Valentine by Vicki Lee Thompson. Formulaic and trashy – but I’m enjoying these silly books anyway… although My Nerdy Valentine was my least favorite so far.
The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires by Katie MacAlister. I got the giggles when I saw this title at the library. It was a “meh” read, which was pretty much what I expected. πŸ™‚
Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley by M.C. Beaton. Finished this one and started the next… and put that one down after 20 pages. I just can’t get sufficiently engaged in Agatha Raisin…
Seize the Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Ok, I admit it – I’m completely addicted to the Dark Hunter books now and wish I’d been reading them in the correct order instead of skipping a few here and there.
D.A. by Connie Willis. This young adult science fiction book was ok (the moral of the story wasn’t subtle at all!), but so short that it seems far better suited for a short story collection than as a standalone novel.
Lost in Austen by Emma Campbell Webster. Ever wondered what it would be like if Jane Austen has written her novels as “Choose Your Own Adventure” books? Wonder no more! πŸ˜‰ A cute premise that seems to owe some inspiration to Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next novels, I’m glad I got this from the library and didn’t purchase it.

  1. Poor May, does she know you posted that picture of her with her mouth wide open!?

We’re supposed to have a wireless network here at work…but I stick to good ol’ fashioned LAN lines. I can never connect here in the downtown core. When I’m at home, no problem!

  2. Hmmm…I guess that no longer having to compete for wifi channels is a potential good thing about the Mpls city-wide wireless scheme. That’s the only one I’ve been able to come up with. Of course, that assumes that people use it, which I find unlikely. Fortunately I seem to live in a low tech neighborhood…it appears to be just be just me and the guy across the street.

  3. Sounds like you’re back to your whole self. Good. I have trouble with Agatha Raisin, too. I just do not like her and I really don’t understand why.

  4. Wow, you should hang that pic on your front door as a Halloween decoration – that’s some scary stuff!

    I hope you’re feeling better. πŸ™‚

  5. Wanted to tell you I picked up The Well of Lost Plots from the library and love it! I have the first book on order at the library; I’m sure I’ll be reading all of these.

I know I am missing some of the literary references, bummer, but I was dying at the Star Wars reference in TWOLP!

  6. Hey Chris! I hope your recovery is going smoothly. I tried to follow this link, KarrieÒ€ℒs having Fake Rhinebeck Post contest, but ended up at Cheryl’s Cabled Sheep site.

  7. Good wishes on your tech problems! Wow – May reminds me of that fish I saw on Fark today who tried to swallow something three times his size! Are you sure Chaos is still around and not in there?

  8. A lot of the Hamish MacBeth books can be downloaded from the Hennepin Cty. Library, most of them are read by Davina Porter (who also read the Outlander series), great books to listen to (love that Scots accent).

  9. May is very scary, watch out Chaos. Have you ever read Stephanie Meyers books??? apparently they are realy good, they are about vampires. a friend of mine is reading them, and I went the library to get them, there were 19 holds for them.

  10. I was so excited about getting wireless until I realized my speed was going to be half of my wired speed. But you have to love the convenience. Did you hear that they arrested someone for stealing wireless internet?

  11. Thanks for the plug! That kitty didn’t look half as embarrassed as those dogs! How’s this for a costume (shows you the nerdy-oh I mean crazy-people I hang around with!)…I only heard about this, but wow! A couple, cone shaped things on their heads, all in foil, silvery (foil?) jackety things. They obviously looked like missiles. Open their jackets flasher style and what’s under? Protracters, rulers, calculators, pencils. What are they? A pun. Weapons of Math Instruction!

  12. Ahhh the wireless woes, not something that we tend to suffer from thank goodness.

Our biggest problem has been lack of wireless range (due to foil backed insulation in all our external walls) to where I intend to put the fileserver.

Thankfully ether over power units work fine and dandy.

  13. Hey-that’s a MAJOR nap yawn. Did EVERYONE at your house nap then? The DF reminds me that if I ate our First Kitty, I would have to be The Reminder of Everything–litterbox AND food dish; Greenies AND deck door. She’s totally a PITA, but just might serve a purpose.

Beides, you know when you just HAVE to pick on someone…anyone? I vote that you keep’em around for awhile.
