Fair on a stick

The main reason I went to the State Fair on Friday was not to search for gluten-free food and beer; however, I did have a pita-free gyro, strawberries with whipped cream, and two glasses of Redbridge gluten-free beer. The main reason was for Jeanne and I to take our UK visitors, Pao and MrsPao, to the most Minnesotan thing we could think of to do. They got right into the spirit of things.

Jeanne’s husband Michael came along, too, and was a good sport.

We saw many strange and amazing sights.

  1. Well there goes my appetite. Surely they had some deep fried kitty treats or tuna or catnip or something for May. 🙂

Is that a sock monkey teepee behind the sock monkey chair?

  2. all that stuff on a stick? The DH would be in hea-ven!

They’ve added a chair now too, huh? I wonder what’s next? An ottoman? A table?

  3. Whoa, you definitely won the food on a stick lottery there. I’m glad to see there was Gator on a Stick, because it was sadly missing from our last festival. Hah!

  4. The mocha on a stick was delicious. I’m bummed that I missed all the alcohol at the fair – my kids were not at all willing to let me even go in the area where it was. Good thing there’s lots of beer here…

That sock monkey chair is awesome! I’m so bummed I didn’t get in to check out anything in the Creative Activities building.

  5. Waitaminnit — I’m commenting first, reading everyone else later. DEEP-FRIED SPAM CURDS??? Now, I’m a transplanted North-Dakotan-Minnesotan Wisconsinite, but that even gives ME pause to think. Didja have some? Is there cheese involved? Hey, I’m Midwestern enough to admit that I actually LIKE Spam, although I tend to do things with maple syrup involved with it.

  6. Agreed – Mocha on a stick is quite intriguing! I miss Gyros a lot! Haven’t even found them in the grocery store here in Tennessee 🙁 The Paos look like they’re having a great time 🙂

  7. Ah the fair. I haven’t been in a few years and I often wonder how I’ve gotten by with nothing deep fried on a stick to eat and no rickety rides to scare me to death or make me puke.
I can’t wait to introduce Myles to fair food and midway games.

  8. Mmmm…mocha on a stick.

You know there is a saying at the ren faires…everything tastes better on a stick!

What I really miss at the NY Ren Faire…a few years ago they had FRIED MAC & CHEESE. Not EVEN on a stick. And it was HEAVENLY. And they never had it again.

    Le sigh…

  9. Oh my god. They added a sock monkey chair?

I really miss the MN food on a stick – the state fair food here isn’t half so good even if we do have Wine Tasting.

  10. Yes!! So bummed I missed the fair this year — though no less than 6 people sent me text messages with either the sock monkey chair or the Dolly Parton seed art portrait. Seriously, though, the Michigan State Fair in Detroit is NOT the same. Far fewer things are on sticks.
