The main reason I went to the State Fair on Friday was not to search for gluten-free food and beer; however, I did have a pita-free gyro, strawberries with whipped cream, and two glasses of Redbridge gluten-free beer. The main reason was for Jeanne and I to take our UK visitors, Pao and MrsPao, to the most Minnesotan thing we could think of to do. They got right into the spirit of things.
Jeanne’s husband Michael came along, too, and was a good sport.
We saw many strange and amazing sights.

Wow, it’s amazing how creative people have become in finding new ways to introduce artery clogging foods. Is SPAM really food? Mayhem, stick to kibble. You’ll live longer and maintain your kittenly figure.

Mom and I tried the chocolate-covered mocha on a stick from the Farmer’s Union (Not sure if it was the same as the picture above), it was good. Looks like you all had fun, right?
I missed some of those booths on our road trip to the Fair (from Wisconsin) — but will be posting my pic of “Hot Dish On A Stick”! My family didn’t want to see the butterheads, more fools they. Sigh. They don’t know what they’re missing. The butterheads were even in the Newsweek that just came (in the Thompson article). We did get a deep-fried Snickers on a stick in the spirit of scientific inquiry. Whoa, talk about sweet and gooey. I feel no need to do that again; but at least I can say I tried it!

I’ll skip the Spam – I’d rather have the cheese curds on a stick. I heard they even had “stain remover on a stick” this year.
I hope to hell that you showed them the heads of the dairy princesses sculpted in frozen butter! That’s the one thing this Jersey girl always has to see and show to the out of towners.

I haven’t gone to a fair here in CO because I don’t think anything would compare. But wow, fair food has really expanded! We have a joke around our house that everything is better on a stick and deep fried, LOL!

Can you believe he never went when he lived in Mpls? I, on the other hand, lived near the fairgrounds (what with the vet school being right next door to it) and went every year.

Some of the foods at the fair were the strangest concoctions I’ve ever heard of. Fresh and fried fruit do not belong together in a string of words, just wrong. I hesitate to even ask what spam curds might be. ::sigh:: What has the world turned to?Frightening stuff.

The food signs crack me up and make me wonder! After 12 years in hawaii (famous for it’s spam) I never came across spam curds! (yuck!)

Didja have some? Is there cheese involved? Hey, I’m Midwestern enough to admit that I actually LIKE Spam, although I tend to do things with maple syrup involved with it.

Ah the fair. I haven’t been in a few years and I often wonder how I’ve gotten by with nothing deep fried on a stick to eat and no rickety rides to scare me to death or make me puke.

What I really miss at the NY Ren Faire…a few years ago they had FRIED MAC & CHEESE. Not EVEN on a stick. And it was HEAVENLY. And they never had it again.

Yes!! So bummed I missed the fair this year — though no less than 6 people sent me text messages with either the sock monkey chair or the Dolly Parton seed art portrait. Seriously, though, the Michigan State Fair in Detroit is NOT the same. Far fewer things are on sticks.
