I haven't heard of Chris Grabenstein. I'll have to look for that. I started out reading the Maggody series, but started to tire of it pretty soon, although it is usually a bit funny when I pick it up. I do prefer the Claire Malloy series more too. I would go for stockinette b/c the pattern doesn’t really show up well with the self-patterning yarn.

It's lovely-all by itself. Stockinette. 9-to-5 needs one of your always wonderful, gradiated hand dyed sock yarns. Like the blue that we all covet. DIC Smoshy? STR semi-solids?
