I finally completed my Wollmeise Tidepool Socks! Looks like I started them in early August last year. Why the heck did it take so long for me to knit this pair of socks?! Well, I love the pattern (I’ll definitely be knitting lots more pairs of Tidepools) and the colorway (Pfauenauga), but had to knit this yarn on US00 (1.75mm) needles. I used Addi Lace Needles and boy, are they ever sharp. So sharp that I kept poking holes in my fingertips and would have to stop knitting for weeks to let my fingers heal. Then (and why do I know that some of you will laugh your heads off at this?), I apparently wore some sort of protective coating off the needles and they started to smell strongly of brass. Blech. That further reduced my desire to work on these socks.

“Wow, it’s been a long, long time since I found a pair of socks on the floor.” -Mayhem

“Socks on the floor make me so happy!” -Mayhem

“Socks on the floor won’t make me cry!” -Mayhem

“Socks on the floor are ever so tasty!” -Mayhem

“Socks on the floor on which I’ll writhe!” -Mayhem

And for those of you who’d like to see a cat-free photo of the socks (although odds are that I lost those readers long ago!):

  1. very pretty socks! And while you do get the whole “almost matching socks” effect in the last picture, the “socks on the floor won’t make me cry” picture just may be my favorite!

  2. See, that’s why I stick my Mom’s old DPN’s in various sizes. None of these new-fangled needles the young ‘uns are using these days! LOL.

But, they did a great job, so it was worth it! Yay you! And yay Mayhem for putting a bit of black into the colourway!

  3. I have to say – “you rock my socks”, Chris…

LOL – those are, I think the most beautiful socks I’ve ever seen. You have to wear them with a pair of Birkenstocks so they can be seen!!!

    Have a great day. 🙂

    L

  4. I hear a lot of people have trouble with the Addi Lace needles–reminds me of the folks whose body chemistry shorts out wristwatches! I know what you mean about the pointy, too—I always hurt myself with them!

  5. Not so. We’re still here. May even sings better than John Denver. Your socks are lovely, but I am a bit concerned about your ability to wear them when May is around. Will she drape herself on your feet?

  6. Look at her! How can you deprive her of such a simple pleasure for so long? Hope this means we’ll be seeing more knitting 😉

  7. I didn’t know you could get cat-free pictures on that floor. I like the socks.

BTW, I knit the Moonlight Sonata shawl on Addi lace needles and the finish came off of them for me as well. :o(

  8. I really like those socks – great color combination!

Though I’m not sure anyone could ever like them as much as Mayhem seems to … 🙂

  9. Wonderful socks! Do you use magic loop? Or the 24-inch lengths and 2 circs?

Mayhem is in her element, and I agree, you make her wait too long between “sock bliss.”
    (((hugs)))

  10. whoa.. double zeros?? you are my hero for finishing them!
I JUST bought a addi lace turbo needle for the shawl I am making. The coating wears off????? yee gaads.

  11. What in the heck is so great about a cat-free photo? Nothing, I tell you. Nothing! Kitties make everything more important.
    Signed, Bonny.
p.s. I try posing with all of my human mom’s stuff to make it look better.

  12. May looks like she needs a pair of booties to go with her tiara collection.

I’ve never used a pair of 00. I own a pair of the 0000 for some intricate beaded knitting that I never got around to doing. I still have the instructions somewhere, but the drive to make the bag went away a long time ago.

  13. Those socks are gorgeous, and I love the name tidepool for them. Okay, what’s up with the lake creature? I will keep a lookout on my run. The website for the creature is actually quite lovely, too.

  14. Congrats on finishing the socks. I know I have only been here a short while, but from just getting to know you… a congrats and pat on the back is desevered!!!
And I love kitties in the pic… it would not be picture if Mayhem or Chaos was not in there!!!
Oh, by the way… did the socks scare Chaos like the shorts?? LOL!!

  15. My addi lace started out smelling of brass, which is my least favorite thing about them. I shudder at the thought of knitting socks on 00 needles! I seem to knit socks at 8 spi on US 1s no matter the sock yarn (even STR mediumweight–the resulting fabric is dense).

May is having a great time! She was in such ecstasy to finally have socks to roll on that she didn’t notice their stripey-ness.

  16. I don’t remember the “sunshine on the floor on which I’ll writhe” line either. Catchy though.

Socks! Handknit socks! Socks that don’t make Mayhem cry is the best picture.

  17. May May really really likes those socks, huh? Prolly b/c they smell like you after working on them for so long. She’s gotta rub her scent all over to claim them.

  18. Mayhem on your new socks
    Looks so LOVE-lee..

    Mayhem almost always
    Makes me sigh.

Cheers, Chris! I salute you for finishing, no matter how long it takes.

  19. It’s The Wiggle Dance! I have seen it before. At my house. Generally, immediately after vacuuming. But also involving (preferably wet) knitwear.

  20. I’m poking holes in my fingers with the KnitPicks metal US 0’s – dunno how you managed with even pointier 00’s! Yikes. Oh, and you are very silly indeed to think anyone comes *here* to se a cat-free knitting photo. All the best shots have a cat or two.

  21. I love the socks but I love Mayhem more! The rich colors in the socks definitely suit Mayhem. What a poser, literally. Perhaps a little knitted collar with leftovers is in order? Unless your kitty is really hinting for a wee set of socks?

Does anyone have an answer on how to knit with ##%&* size 0 needles and not poke holes in fingers? It is a very painful and embarassing-to-tell-how injury. We need some engineer types on this problem.

There can never be too many kitty photos.
