Dyeing for yarn

Yes, it’s that time of year again – yarn dyeing season in Minnesota! Yesterday, Jeanne and I headed over to Deb’s for a lovely afternoon of snacks, drinks, conversation, and, incidentally, yarn dyeing. We had a perfect afternoon – temps in the low 80s, low humidity, sun, breezes… ahhhh…

Here’s all the yarn that we dyed:

Deb used those fabric swatches for some of her color inspiration – didn’t she do a great job?

Here’s the yarn I dyed – the bluish thing in the middle is a KnitPicks sock blank. When it’s eventually all untangled, I’ll be able to knit a pair of socks that will be shaded from light blue at the toes through medium blues and purples to dark purple and black at the cuff.

“Mom was gone almost all day on my birthday, but at least Jeanne remembered and gave me a pink sparkly ball! Maybe Jeanne is confused about what a tiara is.” -Mayhem

  1. May, you do realize that not only was your Mom away, but there seems to be a dog in the picture too! Uh oh…

Wow, you all did a great job!

  2. A tiara would be good – but only if you plan on causing a riot or at least a food fight while wearing it. 🙂 Got to live up to your name!

I wish it was yarn dying season here. It’s mostly been stay inside out of the rain season. 🙁

  3. Sounds like a wonderful day!

I’ve never tried a sock blank. Gonna have to try it some day. Hmm…. I’m looking forward to see you socks!

  4. Mayhem, I know where to get that very tiara that you seem to not have received for your birthday. Pink? Sparkly? Jeweled? Right on it.

And the dye party looked fun!

  5. Well, I know which hanks are Debs – so now I’m left to guess which are yours & which are Jeannes….quite a difficult decision since I see no outright purple & black…. of course the blue is yours….hmmmm

  6. Looks like fun! Deb did do an amazing job of matching the fabrics. Looking forward to your blue gradient socks.

Great pink sparkly ball, May! I saw some tiaras at a museum in San Francisco this weekend, and they had nasty combs and things to keep them on (pins, too!). I think the ball is better.

  7. I have a tiara, May, but I’m not giving it up for anything. You really do need to get one.

There’s a surprise, you dyed sock yarn with black in it! (ducking)

  8. That was kind of thoughtless of mom, wasn’t it May. Maybe mom will be able to find you a tiara at the hobby shop.

That looks like lots of fun and lots of pretty yarn too.

  9. What pretty yarn!!

Is that pink sparkly ball sorta mushy and have little strips of what looks (but not feels) like foil all around it? If so Pepper has claimed one as her “baby” and carried it around and played with it til all the “spikes” came out. I got her a replacement but of course, it’s not good enough 🙂

  10. Looks awesome! I may try dyeing a sock blank one of these years. Not yet, though… too much else going on! =)

Oh, and I may have finally managed to mail your package over the weekend. Please let May know that I’m sorry her birthday present is belated.
