A girl and her cat, a cat and his… sweatpants

For the past several months, Chaos had an unusual interest in a pair of green sweatpants. This was not an exclusive relationship, however; he occasionally focused on a grey Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) sweatshirt. I have no pictures because he was usually quite secretive about this behavior. When he wasn’t secretive about it, I was generally gawking at him and trying to figure it out.

Friends pointed out that although it was certainly more simple to have a pair of sweatpants around than a second cat, maybe Chaos needed some company – company more interesting and interactive than sweatpants. However, since the sweatpants have remained on the shelf for the past several weeks, maybe the sweatpants thing was just one of those phases kids go through. (Don’t get me started on phases. His Sweatpants Phase was much better than, say, his Jackson Pollock phase. That was messy.)

What did this relationship consist of? Primarily of him dragging the sweatpants or sweatshirt off the shelf and often into another room. It isn’t easy for a cat to drag a large item of clothing around with his mouth, no matter that said cat is a muscular 15 pounds. I never wear the grey MPR sweatshirt, but when I put on the green sweatpants recently, I discovered that it’s not easy to be sweatpants that have been dragged around by a cat – my poor sweatpants are covered with numerous fang holes.

“Mmmmm… warm laundry…”

“Wait – are those sweatpants I see?!”

  1. Okay, first, I LOVE your cat; I have a weakness for black cats even though both of mine are not. My male went through a “sock” phase where he insisted on dragging socks all over the place–I’m glad he’s over it because he might not live long if he tore into one of my hand knit socks 🙂
Now onto adding a button to your blog–I would love to help you but rather than write a novel in your comments why don’t you email me directly: immeritus05(at)yahoo(dot)com I’ll be glad to share a step by step description of how I do it(which is by no means the right way, but it works for me).

  2. LOL! Fang holes. For some reason that cracked me up.

Getting a companion for a cat isn’t always the best solution. We haven’t had the best luck with new cats getting along with already established adult cats. Getting two when they are kittens seems to work the best. Even if they aren’t siblings.

Does Chaos do catnip? Ours love it. Maybe some catnip sewn up in the remains of a pair of sweatpants? Or there is a pattern at knitty for some catnip toys. In the shape of sushi, or something clever like that.

  3. And Chaos doesn’t like other cats because he’s not a cat – he’s a people. 🙂

I did knit him an eggroll from the knitty Feline Dim Sum when he was a kitten and he loved it. I’ll have to take a picture of it sometime so you can see the price of kitty claw love.

  4. One of our cats will not only sleep on the clean laundry, he will burrow into it completely. This can cause some mutual startlement when it comes time to put the clothes away.

Does Chaos smooch the sweatpants or does he just carry them around?

  5. Kellie – Love the image of a cat erupting out of the clean laundry basket! Chaos would kinda “smooch” the sweatpants (aka gnaw on them affectionately). It was really weird.

Mama_Tulip – There’ll be more on the Jackson Pollock phase at some point. It was, well, messy. 🙂

Pink Rocket – Too funny! My hair’s getting more auburn and less blonde every year, so I could almost go with the red. Not quite yet tho.

  6. It could be worse. I had a cat that stole clothing items and STUFFED THEM UNDER THE REFRIGERATOR. And I mean she went to a great deal of effort and really stuffed them back there.

She preferred small items like socks and mittens, of course, because she could really stockpile those. She’d steal them from the closet. She’d steal them from coat pockets. She’d steal them from the clothes hamper. She’d steal them from your dresser drawers, if they weren’t completely closed.

During those years I literally had my yarn stash in a dresser, in a closet, which was *padlocked*. I kid you not. And she managed at least once to get into *that* (I have no idea how – my boyfriend swore that he hadn’t left the closet open and unattended. I should have known he wasn’t trustworthy…)
