“When the villagers come to my door, I will hide underneath the table in the dining room.”

Reading update: Slow week reading here! Dead Wrong by J.A. Jance. In the latest Sheriff Joanna Brady mystery (Arizona), she’s coping with a staff shortage, murder, and being 9.5 months pregnant.

Last night I went to the Triple Rock Social Club to see one of my very favorite bands, the Mountain Goats. (This post’s cryptic title is from their song “If You See Light.”) It was very, very traumatic for me, staying up that late and being out and about! Fortunately, I had good parking “carma” and then snagged a prime spot to watch the show when I got inside. They basically played their new album Get Lonely in order, with a few detours (Heart’s “Barracuda” was the best!), then played some of their older stuff. (And Leah, the new stuff was mostly excellent live – it had a lot more zing than on the cd.) It was a great show, especially considering it was the first stop of their tour! But damn, did I feel old – I was probably one of the 10 oldest people there… This was the first time I’ve been to a show at a bar since the Minneapolis smoking ban went into effect last year – I know it’s been controversial, but it was amazing to not need a shower after a show and also not to wake up with a “hangover” from second-hand smoke.

Largehearted Boy is having a Get Lonely contest! Could the timing be more perfect?! 🙂

Time for a decent picture of Mayhem – she’s purring and making happy paws because I’m looking at her, the sweetie. She definitely has the stealth tabby thing going, as well as maybe being a “smoke” (check out section 2 in that link). Her eyes are actually a sort of gold amber, not the green that they’ve appeared in photos.

*rumbling*

I think Chaos and May are playing now. I’m hoping that’s what it is! Either that, or she’s running for her life much of the time. I caught Chaos giving her a bath this morning. Awwwww… (No, there isn’t a picture – it was 5:30 am…)

“Ha ha! I got Mom’s spot and that big kitty isn’t anywhere around!”

“But why am I feeling so nervous? It’s as if someone’s watching me…

  1. It’s great to be able to go to non smoking venues and watch them slink outside to smoke.
So no 5.30 am photo means the camera isn’t beside the bed!
May is very cute making happy paws.
Chaos is still fascinated by her.
I’m sure that he has decided to keep her!

  2. I love that about the smoking ban — being able to go out and come home *not* smelling like an ashtray. I don’t mind smokers, but I don’t smoke so I don’t want to smell like one, you know? I’m glad you got a chance to see some live music! Very cool. 🙂

  3. Mass banned smoking a couple of years ago and it’s great. Dale is in a band and he used to come home from jobs and I could smell him as soon as he got in the back door. It’s so much nicer now.
And May! Oh, she’s just gorgeous!

  4. Aw, so sweet! That’s a good sign if Chaos is cleaning her. Gandalf’s eyes are the same colour as well – from afar they look like giant green saucers, but close up they are definitely amber.

    Little wee kitties!

Let’s see how much Gandalf loves his Mom once I pile him in the carrier and head off to the Vet this morning…

  5. You can still smoke in clubs and bars here in ATL and I hate it. I hardly go out but when we do I feel like I should just burn the clothes I wore. Ew. I used to smoke back before Munchkin and I can’t believe I stank that bad all the time! Ew.
The ‘kids’ look like they’re tolerating each other..

  6. She’s gorgeous! I see what you mean by stealth tabby. It is a really good sign that Chaos is washing her 🙂

I know what you mean by staying up – I just can’t do it anymore! Smoke-free is great. We’re going that way in the UK next year.

  7. Glad you enjoyed your night out, I feel the same way after being out, exhausted. Love the pictures. Mayhem is beautiful. Chaos is just taking care of her,

  8. Ah…a no-smoking ban…just what is that? I’m here in a state that still considers tobacco one of it’s major cash crops. (sigh) *I’m also a reformed smoker – one of THOSE…* I don’t blame you for hating the smell…
I must tell you I am SO glad to see that I am not the only one with towels all over my furniture b/c of my cats!!! 🙂 I’m afraid I failed Home Decor 101!
The cats are so funny…(but dear Chaos…he looks a trifle as if he’d still like to eat May…glad to know he’s into bathing her now…)
    (((hugs)))

  9. Glad you had fun last night! I’ve only ever been to one of those bar performances – because a family member’s band was playing a gig.

May is really beautiful – you’ve caught some sunlight coming across her or some stealth red in her fur – can’t tell which! In another week I bet Chaos and Mayhem will be inseparable ;o)

  10. I can’t stand much more cuteness.

Washing each is a *very* good sign =)

I was deliriously happy when MA went smoke free (around 15 months now…I think…maybe a bit longer) I’m a reformed smoker and the slightest whiff of smoke makes me gag so I’m thrilled to be able to go out now (after an afternoon nap, of course).

  11. If Chaos is bathing Mayhem and they aren’t beating the crap out of each other, then that’s definitely a good sign.

I’m envious of your no smoking ban. I hate feeling like I have to burn my clothes when I get home.

  12. Girl, I step away from the computer for a bit, and you get a new cat. I love Mayhem! I really love the “locket” on her chest. Willie has one of those, too. Thanks for the cat color FAQ; now my kitties know what to call themselves.

  13. WE have a no smoking in all public areas over here. the bars are complainign that they are losing business but the non smokers aren’t 🙂
May looks very regal She has very wise eyes.

  14. I am glad you went to the show. I like the Triple Rock quiet a bit for music. However, it can be a mixed crowd. I wish I could have been there, I was dog tired from work yesterday.

  15. My son sees pictures of May and Chaos and says, “Hey that’s Wiji!” (Our black cat) I point out that Wiji is way chubbier than the two cats on the computer. SWB thinks for a second and then says, “You’re right. They look like Wiji though. Maybe they’re family.”

  16. *dies of cuteness* Thanks for the kitty link. I learned that my Velvet (who looks like your two) has a locket and buttons. He even has white inside his paw pads. Too cute. Is Chaos a smoker (oops smoke) too?

  17. Awwww!! Beezel used to do that to Dorian – he’d sit on his head and wash his belly, ignoring the indignant squeaking. I am glad they’re starting to get along!

  18. Smoking bans are good. I went to a gig (as we call them) last about 10 years ago and had to leave in the second song of the band that I wanted to see cos ciggie smoke gives me asthma and I couldn’t breathe any longer….

Is May definately a short hair?

  19. We went to a place last night–one of our first nights around here. the first thing I noticed was how smokey it was. Blah. My clothes smelled, my hair smelled. Arg. The people we met there said Austin has gone smoke free, so we’ll have to chack that out. Perhaps next year we’ll even make it to Austin City Limits–just wasn’t in the budgets (time & $) this year.

  20. May is so cute!!! I think they are perfect together!

Oh & I’m so glad to know that you liked the new CD better live! They are coming to Atlanta in Nov. (I already bought tickets) but I was anxious to hear what you thought!

  21. She’s so cute! And Chaos looks so…….discombobulated. Like he’s thinking “Do I eat her? Cuddle her? Wait until she finally leaves?” She hasn’t found and confiscated SRM yet, has she?

I had no idea how little smoking there is here, until, Montreal. OMG! It was culture shock. But other than that, awesome.

  22. I love the Mountain Goats — I saw him about 10 years ago in CA and it was a great show, so if he’s touring again I should go!

Honestly, I never see smokers at all and it seems so weird when I do now.
