A winner, flamingos, and a very odd billboard

Congrats to Heide, who was lucky random number 68! Her caption was “Fibery, mousey goodness. Yum!” Heide, drop me an email with your address if you haven’t already. Thanks to everyone for playing and for the kind words on my blogiversary! You so know that there will be other contests in the future…

Yesterday was lovely here in Minneapolis – sunny, not windy, and warm but not too warm (too warm is coming this weekend). I took my camera along as I walked around Lake of the Isles after work and quickly realized that it’s pretty easy to take Project Spectrum May pictures right now, since everything’s very green.

This heron is my favorite statue near the lake.

I’m quite fond of little Peavey Fountain.

Curious about what the sign says? It’s worth a read – not every fountain is a memorial to horses who died in World War I.

This house on the southwest side of Lake of the Isles has a flamboyance of plastic flamingos in its front yard every year. The flamingos “migrate” around the yard during the summer, clustering in fanciful arrangements.

This picture wasn’t taken around Lake of the Isles – it’s a billboard near work that amuses me no end. See those cats? They’re statues! When the billboard went up, there were only a few cats. Each week, more cats are added. Very clever advertising strategy.

“Give me a break, Mom. Why would cats be that interested in a fishing lure that’s obviously not for catching tuna?”

  1. Love the billboard. I’m surprised no one steals the cats or use that for target practise. Or does that only happen in other cities?

  2. I love the flamingos – and the fact that someone is clever enough to move them around their yard all summer. so hystercial !..
and that ad agency must have somone with a grand sense of humor. love the cat statues!

  3. I love the flamingos, it’s such a cute idea. Either that or have a collection of garden gnomes that move all over. Mess with the neighbors’ heads.

    “Wasn’t that thing over… I thought I saw it…”

Hehe I may have to stop and buy some gnomes on the way home.

  4. I love the idea of migrating yard flamingos!

And that billboard – too awesome. Someone should definitely get a raise….

  5. I love all the flowers around the heron statue! Everything is lovely out right now. Unfortunately, we have zoomed past “pleasant” into “sweltering” down here, but it was nice while it lasted.

Chaos’s eyes are still my favorite May PS!

  6. What a great memorial! Looks like you had a beautiful day. By the way, I really like the color of the socks in your previous post — great subtle colors.

  7. That billboard is genius! And I love the fountain. Great pics.

You need to enter Odd Mix’s weekend photo contest. I’m going to keep telling you that. You’re so talented.

  8. Hooray for spring! The pictures are gorgeous. I always get inspired when everything turns colorful and starts blooming.

  9. I love the flamingos. I’ve always dreamed of having a ton marching around my front yard. Along with a couple of creepy garden gnomes.

  10. The worst flamingo display I’ve ever seen was one that was in front of an orange and salmon colored house. It was inexcreble.

Poor Chaos. He really wonders about you, doesn’t he?

  11. That billboard is the best I think I’ve ever seen! I love it.

Someone mentioned to me that I should mention to you, that I’m having an Animal Charity Drive over on my blog, posted some information today, tommorrow I’ll post a lot more.

  12. Your pictures are all great! Keep up the fun:) Those houses around Lake of the Isles are fahn-cy. I’m going to have to take KT & T’weed for a walk there sometime.

  13. Great pictures I’ve never seen those first two parts of Minneapolis! The kitty billboard is too funny :o)

Chaos – some cats hunt for their own food, but.. I’m not sure I’ve seen many tool users yet!

  14. Thanks for the link to collective nouns, I’m a real lover of words and animals and think that a flamboyance of flamingos is fantastic!

The kitty billboard is just a hoot. I live up on the north shore of Lake Superior by the town with the giant chicken. Which is appropriate for me.

Chaos looks very much like a cat named Charlie Black who used to own my husband and me.

  15. Herons must be the theme of the week, huh? Great photos, especially the cat billboard. When we see lots of birds on a wire or sign, we say “bird meeting.” Guess that’s a cat meeting.

  16. Where do you work? I worked in the buildings just behind this billboard for 5 years before I changed jobs last fall. Is it possible that we have been eating in the same caf without knowing it?
