My thoughts not in a straight line travel

Hard to believe it’s Wednesday again, isn’t it? First, go wish Scout a happy birthday. I’ll wait…. You did? Good. Ok, now go do a happy house-getting and joyful Badger Bygone jig for Rabbitch. I’ll wait again… Finally, on to your regularly scheduled randomness.

Last weekend, I dragged out all my yarn bins to take pictures for Flash Your Stash this Saturday. Talk about an eye opener… After some calculations based on the number of Sterilite bins I have, I estimate I have about 1000 quarts (or 250 gallons) of yarn. About 100 quarts/25 gallons of that is sock yarn. When you consider that volume and then consider that my entire condo is only 637 square feet… What problem?!

Why don’t cats have any smell to them? Dogs do – a distinctly “doggy” scent. But not cats. Well, ok, maybe some cats have a smell. But Chaos doesn’t. I love his furry unscent.

How are they going to finish the Harry Potter movies with the actors they have?! Daniel Radcliffe (aka Harry Potter) was born in 1989, so he’ll be what, 17 this year?? The fifth movie is slotted for 2007… You do the math. Won’t it look odd to have Harry, Ron, and Hermione be 25 or so when they get their O.W.Ls?!

I’ve turned the heel and started on the leg of my first Rainbow Jay sock. Last night I had a bad moment when I thought about how long the color repeats were and wondered where exactly my second skein started… So I started the second sock, with a wee bit of messing around and cutting so that the socks would match. All I can say is that I was very lucky to have started my first sock with the skein I did. If I’d started it with the second skein, I’d be cursing and stomping and rewinding and cutting right now. Whew!

My copy of Subversive Cross Stitch arrived last Friday, during a very rough day at work. The designs definitely brightened my day and had me giggling maniacally in my cube. Nope, I don’t cross stitch. But I do have one of the kits from the book and will definitely be making it at some point. (It’s this one, if you’re curious. Everyone at work knows things are really getting bad when I start dropping the F-bomb. Too bad I won’t be able to hang that in my cube…)

“What, Mom? You think it’s weird that I like to play in the laundry bag?”
“I bet your blog readers don’t think it’s weird. I bet they think it’s adorable. Am I right?”

  1. Of course we think you’re adorable Chaos. And you’re all the cuter for all of your odd little quirks.

You matching sock people… I just don’t understand the obsession…

  2. Of course I think it’s adorable! When my dog, Dixie, was a pup, she loved to sleep in the laundry basket. Now, she wouldn’t fit, the big hog!

  3. Chaos is always right. And adorable.

I’m another one who doesn’t understand the matching sock obsession. Let the yarn be free.

Look like we’re going to have a tight battle in the yarn v. square footage battle.

  4. Indeed Chaos-kitty… you’re not weird at all!!! Actually you’re my favorite blogland kitty!!!

And indeed… I don’t get it either this matching sock thing… if I want matching socks I’ll go buy some. The fact that they’re the same, but not the same is what I love about knitting socks. I ripped a sock the other day as it was becoming the identical twin (by accident) and rewind the ball from the outside so that the colors would be mixed up 🙂

    cheers Eva

  5. LOVE the cross-stitch. Hey, if you can’t hang it in your cubicle, I work from home…I have no such restrictions in my workplace…

  6. My cat smells a bit but then he doesn’t wash himself 😉 But then again, most people who are “allergic” to cats are not allergic to him!

Sounds like you need to learn to love fraternal twins. Some things, like socks and sleeves knitted in Noro, are not meant to match!

  7. Lucy has a mild pleasant scent, but Petey smells like a boy. Much more what I imagine a dog smells like. I love to bury my nose in Lucy’s rabbity soft fur. mmmmmmmm!

And is IS adorable. Chaos knows all.

  8. Good luck with the kit, I don’t cross stitch either but those designs have made me consider it. I love the “bite me” one. 🙂

  9. Okay, color me impressed by the volume of yarn you have. (What I want to know is, how many yards is it total? If stretched end-to-end, would it make it to the moon?)

As for HP, television at least has a long tradition of casting 20-somethings to play high schoolers, so I think there’s a chance they will pull it off. Or at least try to.

  10. Oh my…. I can’t wait to actually SEE the stash! – mine is so pitiful – probably 20 balls total!

Why don’t cat’s smell – as annoying as they can be at times, can you imagine if they stunk, too! They’d not be long for this world!

  11. I need to start unearthing the “forgotten” stash if I want my flashing to be accurate. I am almost afraid to start digging…I may not be able to get it to fit back into the hiding places.

Chaos, you are adorable no matter where you decide to play…nothing weird about it at all! Especially since mine likes to play in the bathtub.

I love those cross stitch kits too. It’s almost enough to make me want to learn to cross stitch. Almost.

  12. My cat Fiona smells of dust. Grady doesn’t have a smell unless he’s dirty – then he smells like dirty head.

And we all know THAT is SO APPEALING.

  13. awww – poor chaos. clearly, you haven’t been thoughtful enough to lay out a pile of clean, white laundry for him to shed on, so he’s been forced to go for the laundry basket.

    cat abuse is SO terrible…

  14. Awww.. of course he’s cute. I’m going to weigh in from the side of the Matchy-Matchy people and say that I just wouldn’t knit a sweater in Noro because I knew that its sleeves wouldn’t match up and that would drive me BATTY! If I had more than one ball of this yarn for my son’s socks I’d be pulling out yarn to find the identical starting point for his second sock.. I’m trying to let this second one be “random” (what a dirty word..) but its really killing me.

  15. I don’t cross stitch either (well, anymore) but even I’m a bit tempted by the subversive cross stitch 🙂

I think it’s perfectly normal for you to play in the laundry bag, Chaos. I might have thought it was weird once, but I have now learned that cats will play in ANYTHING, no matter how inappropriate. (Mine particularly loves empty kitty-litter boxes).

  16. The f-bomb is very versatile; it can be used as just about every grammatical part of speech.

As for HP, it really depends on how the actors age. Ralph Machio was like 23 or so when he played Karate Kid.

    Chaos, of course it’s adorable:)

  17. Of course Chaos is adorable and not weird at all.

I don’t care about matching stripe for stripe, as long as the colorway/yarn is the same.

Umm! You’re going to stitch the “f” word.

  18. I’ve wondered that about the Harry Potter movies too. They’re already looking too old for their character ages! I guess it’s no different than all the 20 something year olds they hire to play high school students in today’s movies/TV shows. It just seems so… backwards.

  19. I LOVE the subversive cross stitch, thank you SO much for sharing the link!!! Cross stitch was my craft of choice before I discovered knitting…

And Chaos is SO cute…he’s at least half of the reason I check out the blog! 😉

  20. I’m seriously considering getting some subversive cross-stitch of my own, I used to cross stich before took up knitting.
Chaos is so cute, I think it’s amazing how he seems to pose for these kinds of things. My husband really liked the El Gato picture yesterday, as did I.
Go over and cheer up Kelly, The Knit Wit please! She needs our encouragement!

  21. I can tell where the cats have been from the way they smell when they come home again. If they have been to Gill’s, they smell of roll-up cigarettes; if they have been next door, they smell musty; if they have been kissing up to nice ladies, they smell of perfume or fabric conditioner.. maybe that’s why Chaos is in the laundry – looking for love 🙂

  22. now I have to send u the blog link, b/c her cat is distinctly smelly… and not in a good way. I’ve often wondered that myself… how come my cats, 12 yrs young, having never had a real bath, can smell so good?

  23. Our dogs feet smell really good, they have an earthy smell to them. We often wonder how an animal who walks around all day and most likely through some very undesireable things, has such good smelling feet.

It is odd though that cats really don’t have a smell to them.

  24. Chaos is cute! I loves me some catchenage. Mine also love laundry baskets. Bonus points if it’s empty and they run in and hide and make me look EVERYWHERE for them because that’s so much fun right mom? Right?????

    Heh.

    Lynda: can’t imagine 20 balls! That’s so…. inadequate. Hee.

  25. my dog stinks…to the point that i have to wash my hands after i pet him because my hand smells. (it’s slightly better when he gets a bath — but he still stinks). i would never stick my face in his fur. but i do that all of the time with the cats.

    and chaos totally rocks.

  26. Grownups play younger people in the movies (and on TV) all of the time, so I don’t think the HP actors will look that out of place. Heck, if Alan Rickman can still be sexy at 60, I think there should be no worries. 🙂

  27. I discovered last week that someone in the house *coughIsadoracough* chewed through the drawstring on our laundry bag and pulled it out of the fabric.

    Eh…who need a drawstring anyway?

  28. Chaos is never wrong. You know that. Never.

I can’t flash my stash without taking the roof off my house and getting someone to take an aerial photograph. It’s everywhere!

  29. Wow…that was way random. I’m impressed! Cross stitch is a breeze–that pattern won’t take long at all. And really, why can’t you hang it in your cube?? That should come standard on each and every cubicle in the known world…! Ha!

  30. I love the cross stitch–how did you ever find that? Cross B*tch is my favorite(that I’ve seen anyway).

I believe the kiddos in the HP movies are contracted per movie(the adults are cast for all)–precisely because of the aging issue. I can’t imagine anyone else playing them at this point though.

  31. Of course Chaos is cute, unless he’s finding sweat pants in there ;o)

I’d wish Scout a happy bday at her blog, but it crashed my browser twice, so I’ll wish it from here! I’m a poor Linux user :o(

The cross-stitch is eyebrow-rising! 1000 quarts of yarn!!! And Chaos doesn’t get to play with much of it all, does he ;o)

hmm… cat smell, I’ll say Sally has no smell, Willow — sometimes she has a smell.. not unpleasant, just distinctly Willowpede. I rack up Sally’s unscentedness to liking to play with all the water faucets in the bathroom ;o)

  32. You could send some of that yarn to live at my house — I have plenty of room!

Simon likes to hide in the laundry basket, too. And he is offended that anyone might even think about a cat smelling!

  33. So Chaos is helping sort out the darks for laundering right? Be careful no bleach or that white mark on the Chaotic chest might get bigger 🙂

I had a kitty before Cleo and Emma that was black and white PJ (short for Cat’s Pajamas). He had the uncanny ability to shed black hairs on the lights and white hairs on the darks so was a multi-skilled shedder.

  34. Of course Chaos is adorable! 🙂 Katie prefers sleeping on the clean laundry. (It takes us a while to put it up.) But then she bathes the ferrets when she thinks they get too stinky.

My stash isn’t that big, it’s just stashed all over the house.

  35. I have to admit I like the cats in the dirty washing a lot more than in the clean stuff. Much as I like my cats, i don’t like cat fur all over my work clothes.
Your stash sounds impressive and surely insulates your apartment well? can’t wait to see it on Sunday (we are a day ahead).
Goodness I want some of that Regia yarn – a girl here has a wholesaling arrangement but I missed out on the order by a day. Dang!

  36. I felt a little dizzy when I started getting my stash out and taking pictures. My husband walked in while I was doing this and I thought he was going to pass out. I don’t think he realized how much yarn I actually had. Chaos you are very adorable!

  37. Oh Chaos! 😉
Yeah, I always think that too about the Harry Potter actors – but I don’t care if they look too old! They have to finish them!

  38. Cat’s check list:
    1) nap
    2) stretching
    3) eat but stare at any human around to let them know that you would like steak every day
    4) run around with toys
    5) nap
    6) let human put me
    7) sit in laundry bag
    8) watch out window

and that’s just the first 15 minutes of the day

  39. Oh Chaos you look so cute in the laundry basket. Hope you’re weren’t having a nibble on your moms clothes now were you? I know that naughty but cute Thunder sure would…..

Re Harry Potter, we just watched the 4th film last weekend and I was real disappointed. It was much better when they were younger. Just not the same anymore (:
